Wondering if you should catch a Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Nexus One or a HTC Droid Incredible as your next Android phone? If you want a Google Nexus One, the only official aircraft carrier option is T-Mobile River (<a href='http://the-best-phone.com/2010/01/27/motorola_zeppelin_to_show_up_at_mobile_river_world_united_states_congress_.html’ title=’Motorola Zeppelin to Show up at Mobile River World United States Congress?’>NYSE: DT). Google recently started push the HTC Incredible to any potential customers interested in a Verizon (New York Stock Exchange: VZ) Nexus One. So, the decision is as much a T-Mobile River vs. Verizon decision as it is a hardware conundrum. Those are tough decisions. Both Android phones ar badass, in every common sense of the word. Both phones tally the latest Android OS. And, both phones ar made by HTC. What’s a conflicted mobile technical school enthusiast to do?

Well, first base off, you mightiness wish to return a gander at William Blake’s thoughts on wherefore he’s not going to switching from his T-Mobile Nexus One to the Verizon Droid Incredible. Give it a read and decide for yourself which device is best for you.

Then, you’ll wish to peruse the photograph gallery below. We managed to get both the Nexus One and HTC Incredible to sit down feather together for a friendly photograph session. This should give you a goodness estimate of what kind of aesthetic differences the devices offer. We’ll net ball you decide which device is for you.

Just the honorable mention of Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s place-shift telephone inspection and repair should bring up memories of the fiasco surrounding Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s decision to proscription Google Voice from the AppStore. Mention Opera Mini, however, and most people will probably react with mild surprise and a healthy curiosity for the newly approved iPhone vane browser choice. You’d think it was all Apple’s doing, right? Well, we’ve just stumbled upon a new “reputation” that claims to wealthy person an email from an AT&T (NYSE: T) employee that describes AT&ere;T’s role in the apps’ AppStore self-abnegation/approval as organism highly influential. But, how legit is that claim? Let’s speculate.

But, before we wax hypothetical here, a little background is in ordering. Blogger Ryan Kearney posted to his blog an alleged email from someone that deeds for AT&T. The e-mail was a follow-up to questions about wherefore Apple approved Opera Mini (a non-webkit vane browser that competes directly with the iPhone’s native Safari web browser) but decided to hold the Google Voice app from going away live on the AppStore. The e-mail explains that AT&ere;T had a “high gear quantity of influence on the II applications being accepted and rejected.”

The story goes like this: AT&ere;T saw Google Voice competing with its highly profitable SMS textual matter message service – Google Voice provides free people text messages. AT&ere;T would outdoor stage to lose out on all those iPhone users paying for $20/month unlimited textual matter subject matter plans if Google Voice were integrated with the iPhone. Opera Mini for iPhone, on the other hand, would allow AT&ere;T to continue to charge the same rates for unlimited monthly information plans while having to service less information through the Opera Mini browser – Opera uses host-assisted page-load engineering that allows for faster page-lading times compared to criterion vane browsers.

Sounds reasonable, right? Well, there ar some problems with this story. First, Apple fessed up to having denied Google Voice on the iPhone. They said that to the Feds, in fact. Sure, Apple whitethorn have initially fibbed about their actually “denying” the app outright, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it was Apple themselves that admitted having made the conclusion to keep Google Voice out of the AppStore.

Second, the argument that free people text messages would harm AT&T’s receipts isn’t all that sound. There ar plenty of iPhone apps in the AppStore today that allow you to send free or cheap textual matter messages to other people. Here ar a duo examples.

Third, there are competing web browsers on the AppStore already. The only reason citizenry were unsure that Apple would approve Opera Mini is because it uses a different interpretation locomotive engine (the office of the web browser that interprets web language into the pretty webpage you’re looking at at right now). Opera Mini actually offers iPhone users a welfare when they ar limited to 2.5G EDGE or slower data connections – again, Opera uses servers to crunch webpages on their end, and then pushes lightweight, optimized versions of the webpage to your handset that require far less information to download. So, in that agency, the story about AT&ere;T liking Opera Mini because it saves them from having to push more data makes some sense.

It whitethorn be that AT&T does see Google Voice as being detrimental to their revenue in slipway that other free people textual matter electronic messaging apps aren’t. It maybe also be the case the AT&ere;T thinks Opera Mini is super-duper awesome because it saves them from having to relocation a draw of data to iPhones. But, we think it’s a mistake to issue those positions and pattern that it was AT&T’s direct involvement that prompted Apple to deny Google Voice while allowing Opera Mini to take over the AppStore’s Top Charts.

In other speech, we’re not sure the title that AT&ere;T had direct participation in either Google Voice or the Opera Mini apps self-abnegation/approving are accurate. This is Apple’s earthly concern.

The email that Kearney received:

Ryan,

I’ve asked my colleagues who business deal with Apple if they knew why Opera was approved while Google Voice was rejected.

I’ve discovered that some of the higher-ups at AT&ere;T did have a high gear amount of influence on the II applications being accepted and rejected.

AT&T decided to cull Google Voice due to the fact that users would have no intellect to hold their texting architectural plan since they would be able to send/receive all their text messages through the Google Voice app which would make use of their data architectural plan. This would price AT&ere;T to lose $20/calendar month per user who got rid of their texting plan.

Opera Mini, on the other hand, compresses web pages before they are sent to the device as a agency to hurrying up their web browse experience on slower networks (EDGE). Because Opera compresses the vane page before it is sent to the twist, it results in less data transfer on the twist. This would resultant role in AT&T saving money by charging users the same amount every month for exploitation less information.

I promise this has cleared some things up.

Here we go again, but this meter it’s from the respected Wall Street Journal. Sources in the know said Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) is workings on two iPhones for this summer and 1 volition be coming to Verizon (New York Stock Exchange: VZ) Wireless.

The fact that there volition be a new iPhone this summertime is not surprising, as Apple normally refreshes its smartphone every 12 months or so. We’re hearing and hoping that it will rich person an OLED screen, new styling and a new operating system that could support multitasking. This is expected to cast out in July or so, and it volition likely sell a 1000000 units in its first base weekend, just like the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

The interesting thing is that the report is saying the Min contract bridge manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co is prepping a CDMA variant for the largest U.S. aircraft carrier. The company, which made the previous iPhones, is reportedly preparation a CDMA iPhone for this capitulation. With over 91 1000000 customers, Verizon has been a tempting butt for Apple since the iPhone was introduced. The trouble is that the scoop trade with AT&ere;T (NYSE: T) ensures a healthy purchase monetary value per French telephone for Apple and the GSM technology is more widespread around the worldly concern, meaning the components cost less than CDMA equivalents.

There’s no news on what character of iPhone would come to Verizon and, once again, we’ve heard this rumour many multiplication before and it hasn’t panned out. But if it did happen, this would be big-meter newsworthiness because I can’t tell you how many iPhone-toting friends I rich person who have pledged to switch to Verizon once Apple’s French telephone lands there. The iPhone has been the primary election driver of AT&T’s new contributor emergence and losing that exclusivity would put option a gouge in this.

As for Verizon, this relocation would help retain millions (if not tens of millions) antsy smartphone users and it could get a lot of frustrated AT&ere;T iPhone users to switch. Ironically, an iPhone on Verizon could neutralize its biggest advantage: a host of data-hungry iPhone users could degrade Verizon’s careen-solidness network, which has already started to tactile property the strain from Droid users.

You’re damn right field we’ll be observation this floor and net ball us know if this changes your rise plans.

CTIA is one of those tech conferences that we can expect to case some kind of new toy, and in this case, we’re hoping that we see quite a few new ones that we’ll get to swordplay with in detail. We’ve compiled a list of things we’ve heard rumored, whispered, and otherwise mentioned about in stillness tones that we think are the most interesting parts of the upcoming show. This is the majority of stuff we’ve already covered in the past tense, but now you tin find it in ace berth for your perusing. And, father’t forget that we’ll be at CTIA, delivery you all the hot newsworthiness as it breaks. So, stay frosty as we take a quick look at what we tin expect, and then what’s announced.

Microsoft’s Project Pink

The deuce devices that we’ve seen, the Turtle and Pure, are obviously being delegated to a very direct range of consumers, but considering the fact that they’re “replacing” the SideKick job of devices from Danger, there’s no surprise there. From what we’ve heard so far, the devices ar electronic messaging oriented, and will have a version of Microsoft’s Metro User Interface, which is based on the User Interface on their upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series devices. So far, the images of we’ve seen of the Turtle and Pure devices have been of the shaky-cam variants, but we’re hoping that CTIA 2010 is going to be the meter that Microsoft comes out and officially announces the devices. We’re also interested in determination out whether or not Verizon Wireless is indeed the premiere pardner for the Project Pink job-up, which has also been rumored.

AT&ere;T

We’ve seen today that AT&ere;T does indeed have things lined up for their presence at CTIA 2010. The Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus are obviously heading to the network, ready to launch within a duet months, and they’ve got their next Android-based gimmick –the Dell Aero– coming down feather the organ pipe as wellspring. We’re expecting to hear something along the lines of punter meshing support, along with more details on the Dell Aero to boot. Nothing really groundbreaking ceremony, but we wouldn’t mind organism pleasantly surprised, either, AT&T. So hopefully you’ve got a few more tricks ready to woo the multitude.

Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile River U. S. Army Talk Networks

We are just months away from seeing the first real next generation network devices, and we’re listening that Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile are going to come out at CTIA 2010 and tell everyone just what it is they’re preparation for their meshing upgrades. We already know that Verizon Wireless is ahead of agenda for their first LTE devices next year, and Sprint has the Supersonic (more on that later), which is their first WiMAX device. We’re anticipating good news from all trio wireless carriers, in both the meshing section, as well as the devices that volition be utilizing those networks.

BlackBerry T

The BlackBerry T (AKA Talladega or Slider) has been ace of those devices that piques our pastime in all the right ways. Sojourner Truth be told, we tin’t wait to see something new, pretty much subverter, from the manufacturer of the BlackBerry job-up. A slider, with a touchscreen, is just the variety of revolution they need, and we’ll bosom it with surface blazonry. Well, if it’s goodness. CTIA 2010 seems to be the perfect tense berth for Research In Motion to announce the device, and that’s exactly what we’ve been listening. Whether or not it keeps the “T” epithet, officially sees the Talladega trademark title, or goes with the simple “Slider” moniker, is anyone’s shot. Then again, if these model figure rumors are true, maybe that’s what we’ll know it by when it does get announced.

Android Powerhouses: HTC Supersonic and HTC Incredible

No one should be surprised by the approximation that Android is going to be a huge name at CTIA 2010. It’s been on a roll ever since the launch of the Motorola DROID (even if the thing doesn’t wish to get updated), and there doesn’t seem to be any stopping it any time soon. So, what can we expect to see at this class’s CTIA? Sprint’s very first WiMAX/4G capable gimmick, the HTC Supersonic is said to be officially announced this workweek. A legitimate superphone, the Supersonic is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon C.P.U. and has a giant 4.3-inch blind (yes, like the HTC HD2). And then we have the HTC Incredible. The Verizon branded, HTC Sense User Interface utilizing resolution to Google’s Nexus One. It’s got the same 3.7-inch AMOLED exhibit as the Nexus One, but apparently this matter is leaving to tilt an 8MP photographic camera, and tally Sense UI. We’ve been listening conflicting reports about the 1GHz Snapdragon processor running under the cowling: it whitethorn be underclocked to 768MHz and it whitethorn not. This is one of the things we’re anticipating being announced in the next workweek.

Wrap-Up

This is by no agency the final word on everything that’s leaving to be announced at CTIA 2010 this week. After all, if we had final examination word on all the products out there, they wouldn’t really need to clutch a show, now would they? We’ll be retention tabs on everything, so if you’re interested sufficiency to stick around (and we know you are), we’ll keep up the merchandise newsworthiness and announcements. What is it you’re looking forward to the most?

Today, thanks to an otherwise unassuming update to the Android Google Maps app, Droids across the land tin now pinch-zoom their hearts out.

The Google Maps 3.4.0 update is now available in the Android Market. Fire up your Droid, drumhead over to the Android Market, and update your Google Maps app. It’s that simpleton. Well, it’s not as simpleton as the over-the-air travel update for the Nexus One, but at least you can controller when you get the update this way. You’ll be up and multi-touching your Droid like it’s going out of style in no meter flat.

Hey, iPhone, look over your berm much?

Zagat, a epithet many New Yorkers immediately associate degree with restaurant reviews, has stretched their field of expertness to cover the North American English mobile operator quad. In their first ever survey on radio companies, 2,319 customers to asked to rate their operators based on several criteria such as voice quality, coverage, and the range of devices their operator provided. On a plate of 30 points Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless scored the highest overall with 22 points, followed by T-Mobile (New York Stock Exchange: DT), AT&T and Sprint (New York Stock Exchange: S), who achieved 19, 18, and 18 respectively.

With regards to reporting the scores ar Verizon: 26, Sprint: 18, AT&T: 18, T-Mobile 17. Reliability saw Verizon on circus tent again with 26 points, T-mobile with 20 points, Sprint with 19 points, and AT&T shoemaker’s last with 18 points. Who has the best rate plans? T-Mobile River and Sprint link for the top spot with 20 points, Verizon is next with 17 points and AT&T is shoemaker’s last with only 14 points.

The average AT&T client spends the most each calendar month, an norm of $85.12, followed by Verizon Wireless at $75.74, Sprint at $74.08 and T-Mobile is the cheapest at only $66.91. Would you recommend your current hustler to friends and family unit? For Verizon customers the answer is 92% yes, Sprint and T-Mobile customers both said yes 79% of the meter, and AT&T is last again with customers expression yes only 69% of the time. Not surprising considering the terrible report AT&T has after taking on the iPhone and weakness to deliver an experience that even closely resembles reliable.

When it comes to capacitive touchscreens – like the displays found on the Apple iPhone and the Google Nexus One – it’s not always just about solving, blind size of it, or whether it’s OLED or LCD. It’s good to keep in mind that a large touchscreen doesn’t do you much good if it’s not accurately interpreting your digit inputs. Well, thanks to MOTO Labs’ new touchscreen accuracy tests, we now know how the venerable iPhone and the new Nexus One carnival against the popular Motorola (New York Stock Exchange: MOT test) Droid when it comes to touchscreen truth and sensitivity.

MOTO pitted the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone, HTC Droid Eris, Motorola Droid, and Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Nexus One against each other in two rounds of testing to comparability each handset’s touchscreen accuracy. The tests used a draft app on each headphone to tracing the path of finger inputs on the touchscreens as it moved diagonally across the exhibit. The first base trial used light source press to mimic light finger-flicks and flitting taps on the on-screen keyboard. The second base trial used metier press to simulate heavier digit inputs, like scrolling through a webpage. The distributor point of the test were to determine how closely the lines drawn on the blind matched up with the actual way of digit inputs.

The results? In both the light- and medium-pressure tests, the iPhone showed precise lines that “indicate accurate representation of finger path,” piece exhibiting some deprivation of sensitiveness at the edges of the display. Both the Google Nexus One and HTC Droid Eris showed a “fairly linear track, with some waviness,” putting both phones in the runner-up situation bottom the iPhone – which makes sense, seeing as how both phones ar made by HTC. The worst touchscreen of the lot was the Motorola Droid, which resulted in a “step-stepping” pattern and “waviness” that indicates “inaccuracies in tracking travel of digit.

The takeaway here is that “all touchscreens are not created compeer.” All other factors (cost, operating organization, steel loyalty, etc.) being equal, if you wish an accurate touchscreen, Apple’s iPhone is your topper wager. If you’re willing to trade with a little inaccuracy in trade for a larger, crisper exhibit, the Nexus One will be your phone of choice. For example, it’s easier to accurately pat a small embedded link on webpages without zooming in using an iPhone than it is on the Nexus One.

Check out the full psychoanalysis at MOTO – they have video recording too!

Note: MOTO is not related to Motorola. It wouldn’t make gumption for Motorola to publicize the Droid’s subscript touchscreen performance compared to the Nexus One and iPhone.

Some of the rumored features in the new Market include aircraft carrier charge documentation and a desktop client, but there’s nonentity official just yet. As for 2.1 itself, we haven’t seen much, and whitethorn just be a care patch to fix 2.0 bugs. In any case, Dec 11 isn’t far away, so we’ll be determination out if this rumour pans out soon enough.
